As the fall season settles in it may mean that the days of working out by doing laps on the pool, or playing beach volleyball are long gone. But, that doesn’t mean it’s time to relegate all of your exercise regimens to the indoors. In fact, fall can be some of the best times to get in some outdoor healthy activities and fill your lungs with that cool, crisp autumn air.
- Nature Walk or Hike
There is nothing like a good hike to make you happier and healthier. From lowering blood pressure to reducing the risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart disease, you have no reason not to break out those hiking boots and find a buddy to head to the hills with. While hiking is great exercise any time of the year, getting out to see the changing fall colors can be seriously breathtaking, so you’re sure to enjoy an incredible view of nature’s glory, while doing your body some good at the same time!
Again, as with hiking, bicycling is a great workout any time of year, but the cool weather and the fall foliage can make it much more fun this time of year. Get out and enjoy the ride, you can always go back to spin class, or your Soul Cycle when the winter hits.
- Kayaking or Canoeing
Kayaking and canoeing are excellent low-impact activities that reduce stress and also can provide amazing fall views. Plus, if you’re taking your boat out at a local beach, or river, beaches, and other waterways are generally less crowded during fall, making it optimal for your paddling adventures.
- Outdoor Sports
From football to baseball, to lacrosse, to pickup games, there are endless ways to grab some family and friends and have some healthy fall fun. There are a bunch of autumn leagues you can sign up for, or you can make your own game and enjoy a little healthy competition. The teamwork will be a nice change if you’re used to sweating it out solo.
- Jumping Rope
By yourself or doing a little double-dutch, this a great time to dust off your trusty jump rope and make a major crunch in the fall leaves with this heart-healthy workout.
- Sunrise or Sunset Yoga
If you’ve never taken your yoga flow outdoors, the fall weather is an amazing time to do so. There are so many outdoor yoga classes available to sign up for, or you could just grab a couple of friends and craft your own flow together. The morning’s “blush” at sunrise or the “golden hour” at sunset will be beyond beautiful for all of your balances, and the lovely backdrop is perfect for relaxing and achieving inner peace – Namaste.
- Trail Running
If you’re tired of the same old jogging path, or of staring at your own reflection on a tedious treadmill trot, autumn is the ideal time to experiment with taking your jog to a new level. Trail running improves balance and coordination and keeps your cardio sessions interesting by providing the most gorgeous views nature has to offer.
