With all of the streaming services now available it’s hard to resist a fun family movie night at home. But how about adding a new (and family-friendly!) meaning to the term “Netflix and Chill,” by making your own homemade ice cream!
An Old Time Treat
There was a time when there were no refrigerators. Even ice was not always available, but that doesn’t mean there was no ice cream!
You can make your own ice cream treat and enjoy the process as much as the results. Use ½ cup sugar, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 cup milk, 3 beaten egg yolks, 1 tablespoon vanilla, 2 cups whipping cream. Use a double boiler or put your cooking pot on top of a pot of boiling water. In the top pot, put in sugar, salt, and milk, stir in the 3 beaten egg yolks. Cook until you see bubbles beginning around the edge.
This part is done when it is sort of thick and coats the spoon. Let it cool; stir in the vanilla and heavy cream.
Pour a cup of the ice cream mixture into a plastic zip-lock sandwich bag, and put that into another zip-lock bag and close. Fill a gallon-size zip-lock bag 1/3 full of ice cubes. Add 1 cup of salt. Zip closed. Wrap in a towel to keep fingers warm. Make a bag like this for each person.
This makes enough for 3-4, so double if you need to. Each person squishes the bag as much as possible for about 10 long minutes or until it is a paste. Take the little bag out of the ice bag carefully to wipe off the saltwater and the second little bag as well. So you don’t get salt in the ice cream.
Spoon into a dish, or eat from the bag! For strawberry, mash 2 cups of strawberries with a half-cup of sugar, and add a half-cup to each small bag before closing it up and putting it in the ice bag.
