What would you do if you wanted your college degree but didn’t have enough money to pay for it? Would you sell your house in order to meet those high tuition costs?
Would you work three jobs to pay for your living expenses? Well, those questions are now being answered by college students in ways you just wouldn’t believe. Recent studies are showing that a rising number of college students are using sex to pay for their educational expenses. That’s right, folks. Our future leaders are today’s current prostitutes!
College students are complaining that the cost of rent, tuition, and school supplies are becoming too much to handle on their own. They claim that their student loans can’t cover the bills and they don’t have the financial support of their parents.
What’s a person to do in this case, you might ask? Sell your body, of course.
The unfortunate thing about this, outside of the obvious, is that many universities are fully aware of the fact that their students are prostituting themselves to pay for their tuition. What’s being done by these institutions? Not a damn thing. Universities are facing the growing reality that their numbers are declining due to their rising costs and they are struggling to figure out what to do about it. They can’t lower the cost of their tuition.
So, they simply cover their eyes to the fact that their student body sells their own body to pay for their education while attending their school. It’s all about the money and there isn’t much that anyone can do about it. The ugly thing is that many universities are actually blocking groups that are trying to support those students who are involved in sex work, according to The Independent.
One group known as the English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) campaigns to support the decriminalization of prostitution. “Serious financial hardship and cost pressures is the driving reason for rising sex work on campus,” stated Laura Watson, a spokesperson for the ECP, in an interview with The Independent.
“We have found that people are mostly working for everyday needs, but some are definitely working to pay off the tuition fees,” Watson continued. It was then shared that the high cost of rent for students attending college was also a contributory factor in why some students felt the need to sell sex to get money.
The idea that students sell their bodies to pay for their tuition is not something new. Many students have worked as strippers or escorts to get through college on their own. The alarming thing about today’s students is that their numbers for utilizing these methods are growing. Far too many young people feel that their options for increasing their finances are diminished and can only include that of selling their bodies.
This says a great deal about how we are raising our children, the support they are given, and exactly how the U.S. expects a person to have a degree for advancement, but somehow provides very little support in the achievement of that degree.
Like most things, we must educate young people on the value that they have beyond their body. They are not taught in high school, or at home, how to make money selling skills beyond sexual. Many students have created companies selling tutorial services, goods made from home, and a plethora of other things to pay for their education (as well as provide valuable experience for their future positions).
One can only hope that the growing trend for sexual favors becomes depleted as society helps them to see the true value that they possess. Then again, it’s only valuable if the student finds it to be.
