Before there was a migrant caravan, there were illegal immigrants who made it their life’s mission to sneak into the United States by any means necessary.
This has not changed, although most of everyone’s attention is on the Honduran migrants who are heading this way in the thousands.
Recently, a video was taken and shared on ABC News that showed illegal immigrants climbing and sitting on the border fence near Friendship Park separating Mexico and the US.
Although agents are keeping watch on the USA side of the park, they are not aware of those who are climbing over the fence near the beach.
How to stop an approaching storm?
Thus far, the migrants that are headed this way are in the thousands and they aren’t slowing down. What started as only hundreds quickly became over 4,000 in a matter of weeks.
This has led to Trump demanding more military support to protect American borders, but thus far the only thing we are seeing is the amazing amount of support the migrants are getting on their journey!
Private groups are providing buses, financial support, and rides to migrants who are on a mission to seek asylum upon their arrival to the United States. This begs the question of whether America is truly ready for the individuals that will soon be knock, knock, knocking on the US door?
Hundreds have already made it to Mexico, with hundreds more on the way. We have historically struggled to protect our borders from what was once called “illegal aliens,” and it seems as if we will struggle a million times more once the migrants reach their destination.
Will a wall really work?
America has relied on a mere fence (which looks like a wall) for decades and somehow the individuals who are seeking their place in America have found a way to get around it…or over it.
Now, Trump has been approved for his “wall” which will be an 18-to 30-foot barrier that is more like another fence…but the agents are required to call it a wall. Whatever! The point is that the fence-wall is supposed to be the answer to keeping people out who aren’t supposed to be here.
This opens so many doors to the issue of exactly who has the right to decide exactly who can’t come into America, but hey…another time, perhaps.
Right now, the wall is estimated to cost $73.3 million American dollars and it isn’t going to look any different from the fence that separates us from Mexico right now. If individuals are able to climb the current fence without being caught or stopped by border patrol, what makes anyone believe this new “wall” will be any better?
Building a new and improved wall to protect American borders sounds nice but will it really work? We can’t play favorites by spending money to keep certain people out at the same time that we give money away to bring others in.
We want our cake and we want to eat it too by professing to take anyone who is in need of protection and asylum, only to then say “except you guys” in the very same breath. Time will tell how this will play out, but until then, the migrants are closing in and they aren’t going to just sit at the border for long.
